What if improving your sales results wasn’t about becoming more persuasive, but about becoming more curious?
Many sales professionals focus on presenting benefits, responding to objections, and finding the right words to close a deal. Yet some of the most important moments in a sales conversation happen before the presentation even begins.
In this recorded iNLP Center webinar, NLP Sales Mastery trainer Jeremy Sycks explores how communication, rapport, buyer motivation, and a genuine understanding of customer needs can create a more effective approach to selling.
Whether you’re an experienced sales professional, entrepreneur, business owner, consultant, or coach, this webinar offers practical insights you can apply to your very next customer conversation.

Presenter: Jeremy Sycks, PCC, iNLP Center Trainer
Recording length: Approximately 60 minutes
Sales Begins with Curiosity, Not a Pitch
Jeremy opens the webinar by challenging a familiar image of sales: the enthusiastic salesperson who immediately begins presenting products and pushing for a decision before understanding what the customer wants.
Most of us have experienced that kind of interaction. And many of us have responded with the familiar words, “I’m just looking.”
The problem isn’t necessarily the product or the salesperson’s enthusiasm. It’s that the conversation begins with the seller’s agenda rather than the customer’s needs.
Jeremy introduces a different approach:
Discover what matters to the buyer, understand their expectations, and determine whether your offering genuinely meets their needs.
This philosophy carries throughout the webinar.
Rather than relying on aggressive closing techniques, participants learn how rapport, listening, questioning, and communication flexibility can support more productive sales conversations.
Understanding the Six Stages of the Sales Process
The webinar introduces the six-stage sales process taught in iNLP Center’s Sales Training program.
Jeremy explains how each stage builds on the previous one, allowing sales professionals to develop understanding and trust throughout the conversation.
The six stages are:
- Meet and Greet: Establish rapport and create a comfortable foundation for the conversation.
- Outline Expectations: Explain what the customer can expect and establish a clear, collaborative process.
- Information Gathering: Ask questions, listen carefully, and discover customer needs and decision criteria.
- Presenting the Product or Service: Connect relevant features and benefits to what the customer has identified as important.
- Addressing Objections: Explore concerns and provide accurate information that helps customers evaluate their options.
- The Decision and Closing: Discuss pricing, terms, and next steps while allowing the customer to make an informed decision.
One particularly useful point Jeremy makes is that closing shouldn’t be treated as an isolated skill.
If you’ve developed rapport, clarified expectations, understood the customer’s needs, and presented an appropriate solution, the final decision may become a much more natural part of the conversation.
The Criteria Ladder: A Practical Tool for Understanding Buyers
One of the webinar’s most valuable takeaways is the Criteria Ladder, an NLP-inspired questioning exercise designed to help salespeople understand the priorities influencing a customer’s decision.
Customers frequently express their needs using general words such as reliable, flexible, affordable, or easy to use.
But what do those words actually mean to the individual?
The Criteria Ladder helps move from a vague preference toward a clearer understanding through three questions.
Step 1: Value
“What matters most to you about this decision?”
Begin by understanding the customer’s priorities.
Don’t assume you already know what matters to them based on the product they’re considering.
Step 2: Evidence
“What would that look like in practice?”
Explore what the customer would need to experience or observe to know their expectations were being met.
This helps turn general preferences into something more concrete.
Step 3: Decision
“How will you know if this meets your standards?”
Clarify how the customer will evaluate whether a particular solution is right for them.
The purpose is not to lead them toward a predetermined answer. It’s to understand how they’re making the decision.
An Example from the Webinar
Imagine a prospective customer says:
“We need something reliable.”
Instead of immediately describing your product’s reliability features, you could ask:
“What does reliable mean to you?”
Then explore their previous experiences:
“What’s gone wrong in the past?”
Finally, ask what would give them confidence in a new solution.
The customer’s answers may reveal that reliability means consistent technical support, minimal downtime, or something entirely different.
This information allows you to present your offering more accurately and determine whether it’s genuinely a good fit.
Try the Six-Minute Discovery Lab
Jeremy also introduces a simple partner exercise that allows participants to practice the Criteria Ladder in a realistic conversation.
You can try it with a colleague, friend, or practice partner.
Minutes 1–2: Person A plays the salesperson and Person B the prospective customer. Practice building rapport and asking Criteria Ladder questions without presenting a sales pitch.
Minutes 3–4: Switch roles and repeat the exercise.
Minute 5: Each participant identifies at least one important decision criterion they heard.
Minute 6: Develop a better follow-up question based on what you learned.
Afterward, consider what changed when you focused on listening instead of explaining.
Did you discover something you might otherwise have missed?
Did the other person’s priorities become clearer?
This exercise can be adapted to virtually any situation involving a decision, from selling professional services to discussing training programs or exploring business solutions.
Beyond Sales Techniques: Confidence, Mindset, and Goals
The webinar also provides an introduction to the broader skills covered in iNLP Center’s NLP Sales Mastery Training.
Jeremy discusses how communication techniques such as rapport building, representational systems, Meta Programs, the Meta Model, metaphors, and language patterns can be explored within the sales process.
But effective selling involves more than understanding customers.
Your own confidence, emotional state, and professional goals also influence how you approach sales conversations.
Jeremy introduces several areas of personal development addressed in the complete training:
States of Excellence: Becoming more aware of your emotional state and practicing techniques to approach important conversations with greater composure.
Resourceful Frames of Mind: Learning to examine setbacks and challenges from perspectives that support constructive action.
Goals and Strategies: Using NLP Outcome Specification and the Disney Strategy to clarify goals, explore possibilities, and develop practical plans.
These topics reflect the program’s broader philosophy: developing the salesperson alongside the practical skills involved in selling.
Your 24-Hour Sales Challenge
Before concluding, Jeremy encourages viewers to take one simple action.
Use the Criteria Ladder in one conversation within the next 24 hours.
Ask what matters most to the other person, explore what success would look like, and clarify how they’ll recognize a good fit.
Then write down one phrase or priority you heard that you might previously have overlooked.
You don’t need to make a sale for the exercise to be valuable.
The objective is to develop greater awareness of how people communicate their needs and make decisions.
